SuperLess (SuperPrior)

SuperPrior reimagines the former Prior department store in Most as an open, sustainable and representative civic landmark. The proposal is guided by the idea of SuperLess: retaining what still holds value while removing surplus floor area, operating costs and physical barriers. Instead of erasing the building’s identity, the project preserves its characteristic steel frame and transforms a former symbol of commerce into a creative and community hub. The existing concrete plinth is opened and partly replaced by landscape, converting an overheated obstacle into a permeable and welcoming extension of the city. A generous urban ramp connects the two levels of the surrounding square and carries public space directly through the building. At its centre, selected bays of the existing 9 × 9 metre grid are removed to create a daylight-filled courtyard for orientation and informal gathering. Flexible halls, workshops, co-working spaces, fitness facilities, a bistro and a rooftop bar support a diverse programme able to evolve over time. A transparent glazed envelope reveals the building’s new public life, while external textile screens provide shading and improve indoor comfort. A phased strategy allows the open ground floor to host temporary uses such as a café, playground or skatepark before the full programme is completed.
